No charge for disposal of:
Yard waste - Defined as grass clippings, leaves and small plant trimmings. A separate pile or area is available for the
disposal of tree limbs, brush and ashes. All loads should be covered or tied down to prevent littering.

No trash, garbage or building materials of any kind will be disposed of at this site.

This brochure is a snapshot of the quality of the water that we provided last year. We are committed to providing you with this information because informed customers are our best allies. It's important that customers be aware of the efforts that are made continually to improve their water system. To learn more, please attend any of the regularly scheduled City Council meetings, which are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm at the City Administration Center. Lake Reopens - Effective May 30, 2008

Effective May 30, 2008

The Wellington Lake has reopened for activities. Old West camping area will remain without electricity throughout the weekend. Boating and fishing activities are allowed to begin again. The primitive camping area on the East and West sides of the Lake will remain closed and be reassessed next week.


Wheat Festival 2008

 

Wheat Festival 2008 will be bigger and better than ever.  There will be five days of fun including the Ottaway Carnival which runs Wednesday through Saturday evenings.   Buttons are $2.00 each and Button Drawings will be held each   evening for great prizes!

Great Race '08

The Wellington Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to present the 31st Slate Creek Relay on Saturday, July 26th, 2008 along with Race Master, Jack Potucek.

 

Up to 12 teams will compete in and around Wellington's Woods Park for the coveted Depot Cup in this 13 event relay race.  Each team consists of 15 men/women, youngest can be 16, age of total team members must average 26 or above.

 

The race begins straight up at 5pm followed by a post race party featuring the Smugglin' Yo-Yos until 10pm.

The public is invited to come and watch this unique race.

Wellington Fire/EMS department has updated their web page.  A new section with safety and health information has been added to help keep Wellington aware of common safety and health concerns.  Also a link to the United States Fire Administration for Kids has been added to give kids a fun way to learn about safety.  Also a fire salvage page with information to help recover after a fire has been added.  This gives helpful tips on cleanup, insurance and recovery of money and important documents.  We will continue to help provide our community with useful information so we can all be better prepared if the worst should happen.

  • SCHOOL ZONES

    Keep in mind that the speed in a school zone is 20 mph. School zones have a reduced speed limit so that drivers can stop if a child darts in front of them. You could be subject to a large fine if you ignore the signs. Be extra cautious around school crossing areas slow down and watch for children on the way to school. When approaching a school speed zone with flashing yellow lights, reduce speed to 20 MPH and maintain it until the end of the school zone.

 

  • CROSSWALKS

    You should not block the crosswalk at any time with vehicles! Crossing Guards are located throughout Wellington. Be observant of children crossing the street when approaching an intersection. Allow children waiting at a crosswalk to cross. Before entering a crosswalk, be sure there are no children in the lane or in adjacent lanes.
  • SCHOOL BUSES

  • When you see a school bus with flashing YELLOW lights, drivers are expected to slow down to a speed that will allow for a sudden stop.
  • A school bus with flashing RED lights signals that students are either getting on or off the bus. Drivers must STOP and wait for the bus driver to turn the flashers off, no matter which direction they are traveling. Students crossing the street after exiting a school bus should cross in front of the bus. Please wait until the red lights stop flashing and the stop arm is retracted before proceeding.
  • Failure to do so could make you subject to fines. Subsequent offenses can result in loss of driver's license.
  • All school buses are required to stop at railroad crossings. Keep enough distance between your vehicle and the school bus to avoid a rear-end collision.

 

  • SCHOOL DISMISSAL TIME

    Be cautious of heavy bus traffic at school dismissal time, and children crossing the street.

  • CROSSING GUARDS

    The city of Wellington provide crossing guards for busy street crossings near elementary schools. Guards are on duty at elementary schools between 7:20 - 8:00 a.m., and 3:15-4:00 p.m.
  • Locations are:

      • Vandenburgh and Harvey
      • 8th and F St (Lincoln School)
      • 501 N. Woodlawn (Kennedy School)

Tethering Ordinance

Effective November 1, 2008

   Unless a dog is under the direct supervision of the owner and/or harborer, it shall be unlawful to keep a dog tethered in place for more than two (2) hours at a time. After a break of not less than two (2) hours off the tether, a dog may be tethered again for two (2) hours. A dog may not be tethered more than four (4) hours in any twenty-four (24) hour period.

Conditions of tethering are defined as follows:

  • Dogs shall be tethered in such a manner as to prevent injury, strangulation or entanglement on fences, trees or other objects.
  • Any chain or tether must be attached to a properly fitting collar, or to a harness that is worn by the dog. Collars shall not be of a choke type.
  • No tether shall weigh more than 1/8 of the dog's body weight.
  • Any tether shall be at least ten (10) feet in length and have swivels on both ends.
  •  Any tethering system used shall not allow the dog to leave the owner's property.

LAWN MULCHING REBATE 2008

Lawn Mulching Rebate


This "Grass Cycling" program will provide an alternate to bagging.

January 1 through June 30 - the City of Wellington, KS will give you:

$30.00 rebate with proof of purchase of a new mulching lawn mower

$10.00 rebate with proof of purchase of a lawn mulching kit

When available, it is preferred that mulching mowers and conversion kits be purchased from Wellington dealers.

Rebate forms are available at participating Wellington businesses.

Rebate forms must be submitted to the City of Wellington by
AUGUST 31, 2008.

All residential customers served by the City of Wellington, KS Sanitation Department are eligible to participate.

SOME ADVANTAGES OF MULCHING INCLUDE:

SIDEWALK PROGRAM 2008

 

CITY OF WELLINGTON

 

Residential Sidewalk Replacement Program

 

The City of Wellington has a program to assist City residential property owners in replacing old and/or damaged sidewalks.

 

The City will cost-share with a property owner and reimburse up to $2.75 per sq. ft. for 50 linear feet or less of replaced sidewalk, up to a maximum of $550.00 or $2.25 per sq. ft. for up to 75 linear ft. with a maximum reimbursement of $675.00.

 

Property owner may perform the work or hire a Contractor. All new sidewalks must be constructed of concrete and to current City sidewalk standards and is subject to preliminary, pre-pour and final inspection.

 

The program ends when the City's program budget has been expended or allocated; therefore those interested should complete and return the program application as soon as possible for approval and inclusion in the program.

 

Applications are available at the City Manager's Office, 317 S. Washington, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
