The City of Wellington Compost Site opened in March of 1997 to help relieve the amount of debris that was going to the landfill. In 1997, the site took in 5,500 cubic yards of tree limbs and brush, 310 tons of grass and leaves with 5,800 vehicles going through the site. In 2007, it took in 8,000 cubic yards of tree limbs and brush, 400 tons of grass and leaves with 9,500 vehicles going through the site. In addition, 40 tons of compost went out to the public. In 2010, our traffic increased to 10,881 vehicles, 10,919 cubic yards of limbs and brush, 151 tons of grass and leaves and over 90 tons of compost was utilized by the community.
The Compost Site does not have a separate budget for the facility; it is funded out of the Sanitation operations budget. The Compost Site sets on 24 acres. It is manned by one part time attendant, assisted by Street Department personnel who turn the compost, push up tree limbs and maintain the grounds.
Each year, there are about 40 tons of composted grass and leaves available for the public to use in gardens and flower beds. The City of Wellington allows one pickup load per resident until it is gone.
NO CHARGE FOR DISPOSAL OF: YARD WASTE - grass clippings, leaves and small plant trimmings a separate pile or area is available for the disposal of tree limbs, brush and ashes.
No trash, garbage or building materials of any kind will be disposed of at this site.
Each year we are subject to a rigorous inspection by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
