Haz Mat

Wellington - Winfield - Arkansas City

hazmatThe South Central Kansas Hazardous Materials Team began its Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat) program in 2002. Our hazardous materials program developed out of a lack of any agency in the area able to respond to such emergencies.  The three departments signed an agreement with the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office to respond as a Chemical Assessment team to assist local fire departments in handling hazardous materials spills.  Since then, the team has gradually made improvements in apparatus and equipment used for hazardous materials response and can respond as a response team.

The team currently is comprised of 9 - Haz-Mat technicians from our fulltime department personnel. All members of the team are required to be Haz-Mat Technician level. The department conducts monthly training sessions in hazardous materials and a yearly practical exercise.
