Electric Distribution

Electric Distribution is one of five departments within the Public Utilities. Under the general management and direction of the Assistant City Manager for Utilities and Information Technology, the Electric Distribution Supervisor and staff of nine work together to provide and maintain the distribution of electric power to approximately 4,600 customers.

Electric Distribution Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of approximately 150 miles of overhead and underground power lines and electric delivering equipment. The department also maintains city streetlights, all city property lighting, school zone signals, and traffic lights.

All line workers have completed or are enrolled in the Kansas Municipal Utilities (KMU) apprenticeship program. It is a State of Kansas certified program and its purpose is to produce quality, certified journey level workers. The end result is a highly qualified workforce trained in all the current techniques of distribution facility construction and maintenance.

KMU FlagsLine workers participate as students and instructors in the annual KMU Hotline School. The event provides classroom training combined with practical line worker skills including such things as simulated hotline work, overhead and underground power line maintenance and construction, pole climbing, and injured man rescue.

Electric Distribution provides qualified NEC electricians to install and maintain electrical apparatuses in other City departments and facilities to minimize expenses.
