Wastewater Treatment is one of five departments within the Public Utilities. Under the general management and direction of the Assistant City Manager for Utilities and Information Technology, the Wastewater Supervisor and staff of four work together to provide the proper collection and treatment process to ensure a healthy environment for the citizens of Wellington and Sumner County.
Wastewater Treatment staff are responsible for the following:
- Maintenance of the lines in the wastewater collection system so that wastewater is efficiently delivered to the various treatment facilities.
- Approximately 282,031 linear feet of sewer lines
- Approximately 957 manholes
- Ten outlying wastewater lift stations (6 within the immediate city limits, 2 at the Airport, and 2 at the Wellington Lake)
- Six holding tanks at Worden Park
- Lagoon treatment systems at the Wellington Lake
- Treatment of wastewater at the Treatment Plant so that it is discharge to Slate Creek does not exceed Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) discharge limits. The daily average of discharge is approximately 750,000 gallons.
- Hauling of wastewater sludge remaining after treatment process for agricultural land application. There is about 200 dry tons of sludge per year.
- Sampling, testing, and reporting to KDHE as required.
- Monitoring local industries for pretreatment and discharge restrictions.
- Answering inquiries from citizens, local, state, and federal officials regarding the wastewater collection system maintenance process and the wastewater treatment process.
